To reduce your dog's anxiety when you leave the house, try giving her a food cube just prior to leaving. These small plastic or rubber toys can be stuffed with treats and will occupy your dog for a little while, long enough to forget that you have left.

3rd Annual Ruckus RunThis Saturday, 7/24, is the Third Annual Ruckus Run -- a fun-filled motorcycle (and auto) poker-run benefiting Cascade Bulldog Rescue and Rehome. The run begins at Beaverton Honda, and proceeds over a pre-determined course that takes you through the beautiful Portland city-scape. Five designated stops along the way will give you your full poker hand. Pay-outs given for high hand, low hand and mileage guess. There will also be a raffle with prizes. The run will end back at Beaverton Honda for a BBQ with entertainment and fun things for the whole family (including your pets!). A great day of fun for the whole family! [July 22, 2010] First Aid for Your Best FriendWould you know what to do if your dog was choking, or had a cut on her pad? Every dog owner should have a basic understanding of pet first aid and fortunately, Northwest Veterinary Specialists will be providing a FREE "First Aid for Your Best Friend" class at the REI in the Pearl on July 18. The class will include a CPR and bandaging demo/lab as well as an open forum for questions. They will discuss common emergencies including heat stroke, bloat, and brachycephalic airway syndrome as well as the 5 most frequent toxicities that they see in the ER. [June 29, 2010] Dog Movie "SNIFF" in Weeklong Run at Clinton Street TheaterSniff opens the door to a new genre of film -- a serious documentary wrapped in a fictional comedic story. Two British actors, hired to be the dress-up concierges of a high-end San Francisco dog hotel, decide to use the opportunity of their year-long contract to fulfill a dream and make a documentary about dogs. The trouble is, they're not quite making the same film. Sniff is peppered with fascinating bits of science and dog lore, intended to deepen our appreciation for these extraordinary creatures. [May 28, 2010] 10th Annual Pug CrawlThe Portland tradition continues on Sunday, May 23rd when a parade of costumed pugs take to the streets for the country's largest gathering of pugs. The popular Portland event raises funds for the Oregon Humane Society and gives hundreds of pugs (and their owners) a chance to enjoy food, microbrews and live music while watching the annual Parade of Pugs outside of MacTarnahan's Taproom in Northwest Portland. The scammers are advertising puppies for sale on the internet, complete with photos of the dogs, requesting money to be sent to Nigeria for the sale, but it's all a fake. He was found on the side of the road banged up pretty bad with burns over 90% of his body. He has since made a miraculous recovery and is now looking for his forever home. [Jan 31, 2010] Rose City Classic Dog ShowIt's the time of year again...time for the Rose City Classic Series of Dog Shows. The show is one of the largest and most successful dog events in the United States. It spans 5 days, starting on Jan 20 with 20 specialty (single breed) shows and continuing with four days of all-breed dog shows, obedience (including Rally) and agility trials. [Jan 4, 2010] Oregon Humane Society Undergoing Two Major Rescues, Over 150 DogsThis week the Oregon Humane Society responded to 2 separate incidents involving hundreds of neglected dogs. The first rescue occurred in Eastern Oregon, in the small town of Princeton, where OHS rescued 79 dogs that were living outside in horrendous conditions (in old oil drums and in underground holes). The second rescue occurred in Tillamook, OR where 98 rat terriers were rescued after a local breeder agreed to surrender her dogs. This is the largest rescue in such a short period of time that OHS has ever performed, and they are in need of your support as their shelter is strained to capacity.
